[00:00:00] Wayne: I'm Wayne Carey and this is the Truth Hurts. Well, here we are for a special edition of the Truth Hurts, a bit of a football boxing special. So I'm not sure what number it is, Tony, but we're going to talk about we've, I've spoken about this on my podcast before and Anton and I had a good conversation around this last year and I got a lot of feedback about it.

[00:00:28] Wayne: Because we know that big, um, last year, big Tommy Bell Chambers fought Cam Mooney. So I spoke about that on the podcast last year and there was a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot of feedback. And in saying that, so much so that there have been people coming to me and also mates of mine and talking about a concept, right?

[00:00:53] Wayne: Listen to this. Of maybe. Just maybe doing something with some local [00:01:00] leagues. So watch this space. It could be a lot going on around boxing. Boxing needs, the one thing, and you're good mates with Jeff Fennec and Anthony Mundine. Yep. People don't know that. We have spoken about that on other podcasts, but people don't know that you are good mates for those two, both champions.

[00:01:17] Wayne: Yes. Right, both legends in Australian boxing. One's a legend, I think, in rugby league as well, but we'll, we'll, we'll get to that. A lot of boxers get Peeved off about footballers coming in and taking the fanfare and all of this sort of stuff. Because they, well, they think that they're degrading their sport.

[00:01:40] Wayne: Of which they started when they were eight. And these footballers, and I'm talking about guys like, I don't know, Barry. You know, Barry won't, Barry Hall, that is my, my, my, my. Won't mind me saying this, he did boxing as a kid, but he's, at the end of the day, he's a, he's a champion, um, AFL footballer. He's not a champion boxer

[00:01:55] Tony: yet.

[00:01:56] Wayne: Yep. Um, and he's, and he's had some, he's had some fights, [00:02:00] but there's, there's always a lot of talk, right? Around, you know, should I be getting that in the boxes? Like I said, there's some jealousy. I know that Jeff has a different view on it. And I know one of the greats of all time in the world, that is heavyweight world, Mike Tyson.

[00:02:16] Wayne: Yeah. He and others don't mind it either because if it just, if it attracts eyes given the UFC's popularity and how much that's taken off, if it gets eyes on boxing and makes boxing bigger, then at the end of the day, those boxers that do it for a living and have done it their whole lives, it'll come back to them.

[00:02:37] Wayne: Because there'll be more eyes. There'll be more money, more pay per view, more everything. So they should encourage these types of things, but I do want to get to it because, uh, in a couple of weeks, in actual fact, pretty much two weeks to the day. that there will be some footballers fighting one another in Adelaide the night before Gather Round.

[00:02:59] Wayne: On the

[00:02:59] Tony: Wednesday night. On the

[00:02:59] Wayne: [00:03:00] Wednesday night. And it's a big, it, it's actually, it's been promoted really well, I reckon.

[00:03:05] Tony: And it's going to be broadcast on Stan.

[00:03:07] Wayne: Is it on Stan, is it? It is on Stan. Well, and the reason why I, I like, This concept because I, I think the guys are taking, by the way, they're wearing for those out there that don't know, I'll tell you, so Swanee is fighting, um, Daisy, yep, so two ex teammates, so there's not a lot really in that, that'll be a

[00:03:26] Tony: bit Mickey Mouse,

[00:03:27] Wayne: a little bit Mickey Mouse, who else have we got, we've got Kane, Petiphar, Fighting Mitch Robinson.

[00:03:33] Wayne: That's a good one.

[00:03:33] Tony: That is a good one. And I mean this in the most complimentary way. But Mitch has got a lot of bull and dog in him. Kane can

[00:03:41] Wayne: box. I think Kane's had one professional fight. No, I think he's had three. So he's had three fights. Mitch Robinson, I'm led to believe, maybe, he's only recently retired, I believe he might want to make a bit of a career out of it.

[00:03:53] Wayne: Transition. Transition into boxing. Wow. So that is a fascinating, that's, that's the one, that's [00:04:00] like your, your Barry Hall and your, your Gallon. So two guys that can actually fight a bit that have played footy. So that, I'm, I'm looking forward to that. Just

[00:04:06] Tony: before you go on, Pettiford's a lot taller than Mitch Robinson, but who do you like out of that bout?

[00:04:12] Tony: I'd be going

[00:04:13] Wayne: with Pettiford at this point. Mad Mitch, as I used to call him, that . It's gonna be, but no, but I, I love him. I love him. Oh, by the way, he's very good on social media and he's got his own podcast. He's very on social media. Yeah, I, I, I really like him. So I'm, I'm looking forward to that one in particular, the Swanee Daisy one, uh, two teammates, both Powder Puffs,

[00:04:31] Wayne: I'm not, I'm not, uh, not massive into that. The

[00:04:34] Tony: Swee training. Well.

[00:04:36] Wayne: Training well. Like I said, yeah, he's been off the, uh, off, not having a beer, training hard. So yeah, he'll be ready to go.

[00:04:43] Tony: And Daisy's chompers. I don't know whether he'll want to

[00:04:45] Wayne: expose them. I was going to say, you don't get new chompers and then, uh.

[00:04:48] Wayne: Jump into the ring. Jump into the ring. Although, like I said, they're big gloves. 22 ounces, I think. Well, 20, like, massive. And they're wearing heat gear. They're like pillows. I'm not sure about that. Then you've got Nathan Brown taking on, uh. [00:05:00] Now, this is probably the one that people have a lot of interest in.

[00:05:04] Wayne: Almost the main bear. Well, there's a lot of people that, you know, Cain upsets people. I like Cain. I like a lot of his opinions. Throws a lot of darts. Gets some right. Gets a lot wrong. He's good at his job. In the end, he has an opinion.

[00:05:16] Tony: Yeah, he was half insinuating a crack at you. And I like it. I wouldn't

[00:05:19] Wayne: have thought so.

[00:05:20] Wayne: Cain's, Cain's smarter than have a crack at me. Because I, I will see Cain in Adelaide by the way, cause I'll be, uh, I'm going over there. Cain, watch out! Um, he's fighting Nath Brown though. And you know Nath Brown quite well. I, no I do, and I, well I've worked with Nath for a long time, I, he's a beauty, I, I love him.

[00:05:40] Wayne: Great job, they both do a good job on the Sunday, uh, footy show.

[00:05:43] Tony: Yep.

[00:05:44] Wayne: But, if you're gonna fight anyone, you'd probably, if Cornsie was gonna fight anyone, it'd probably be Nath Brown. If, if, if you was to pick anyone out of that group, He'd probably pick Nath. Um, Nath's not a killer. No. He's, uh, he's He's quite vain as well.

[00:05:59] Wayne: Well, [00:06:00] yeah, I'm not sure he wants to get hit. No. I think

[00:06:02] Tony: he'd prefer to be on the Today Show at 6am rather than Correct. getting in the ring.

[00:06:06] Wayne: That's an interesting fight. I, like, if, if Kornzee, if Kornzee happened to get the better of I'm not sure he'd be able to show his face. I reckon he'd have to retire from all media outlets if, if, if Cain Corns beat him, he would have to.

[00:06:25] Tony: Well, you get excellent mail. Everybody knows that you've got your tentacles are everywhere. What's your inside mail? Okay. I

[00:06:31] Wayne: know Nath Brown has been sparring with Cain Pettifer, old team mates.

[00:06:37] Tony: Really? Down on Chapel Street? Yes.

[00:06:38] Wayne: And I heard there's a little bit of blood been flowing. From brownies nose, not from, not from Kane.

[00:06:44] Wayne: So, we're finding out whether, I think, I think, uh, Pets is just finding out whether Brownie's got a good jaw or not. Cause he might, not that he's going to need one against Cornsy. I mean, Cornsy's, you know, not exactly Hercules. He's, [00:07:00] he's, you know, he's all skin and bone. He's about 50 kilos wringing wet. Yep.

[00:07:03] Wayne: Got to run around the shower to get wet. So, that's, that, that, but that's got a lot of interest in it, because they're colleagues as well. So, let's watch this space. The other one that is fascinating, because I've, I've actually sparred both these guys over there, but a long time ago, so I, I used to spar Corey McKernan, um, at North Melbourne, but not a lot.

[00:07:27] Wayne: He was a guy that got in every now and then. And, and he's And his strength against me and against others was that he's six foot six with a reach, you know, that much longer than everyone else. So he's a big, big guy, but guess what? Anthony Rocker has, he's the same size with the same reach. So that's fascinating.

[00:07:48] Wayne: And I sparred Anthony Rocker in 2010. No, not 10. Eight, sorry. That was when you were coaching Colin. I think it was, or seven, whatever it was. I had, I sparred him a couple of times. Yeah. Goes All right. I've heard [00:08:00] that. So that's, that's fascinating, that matchup.

[00:08:03] Tony: So Anthony Rocker has obviously got some technique and some style.

[00:08:06] Tony: He he

[00:08:06] Wayne: can, he can, he knows. He knows how to, yeah. He did a lot of ade and he did a lot of boxing, um, at Collingwood. Yeah, they reckon knows he's given a few, uh, teammates smacking. So Jackie, Jackie King at North. He, he was our boxing guy and he looked after, you know, so he did a little bit with Corey.

[00:08:22] Wayne: Corey's no duffer. He, you know, he, he'll be able to, but he's a bit of a lover than a fighter. And I do know that Corey has been doing a little bit of training. We've got some breaking news. Now, when he went, he went to Perth and he sparred, he was over there with the, uh, green machine. Oh, the old Danny Green.

[00:08:42] Wayne: He was over there with him and, uh, got a couple of tips and did a couple of technique things and.

[00:08:47] Tony: Yeah.

[00:08:48] Wayne: So apparently took a lot from that and then, uh, back in, uh, back in Queensland, we'll get to, who lives up in Queensland now? Go on. Big bustling Barry Hall lives up there. What

[00:08:58] Tony: are you alluding to? So

[00:08:59] Wayne: [00:09:00] Corey has been doing a little bit of work with Baz.

[00:09:02] Wayne: Really? Yeah, so he's taken this very seriously. I'm led to believe Rocker has lost. A stack of weight.

[00:09:08] Tony: Yep.

[00:09:09] Wayne: Ten plus. Wow. Corey's lost I think six, seven, maybe a little bit more now plus. Is Corey worried by Rocker? Oh, I don't know. I haven't asked him, but.

[00:09:22] Tony: Well, he's obviously going to the nth degree to get the best out of himself and his body.

[00:09:26] Tony: Talking to Danny Green and Barry Hall. Yeah.

[00:09:28] Wayne: Well, if you'd be a, you'd be silly not to go into a fight and not take it seriously. The thing that I will say. About, and, and like I said, I've, I've said this, uh, before, and I, if, if this is the concept, footballers fighting footballers, I, I really like it. It's when a footballer is fighting an actual boxer.

[00:09:50] Tony: Yep.

[00:09:51] Wayne: That, it's just a mismatch. Yeah. If, if they're not a bad boxer, they'll beat a footballer every day of the week.

[00:09:56] Tony: Unless you're Paul Gallen.

[00:09:57] Wayne: No, no, Paul [00:10:00] Gallen's not a bad boxer. No, no, against another footballer. Oh yeah, of course. Yeah, so you listen sometimes to what I'm actually saying. So, you know, when Barry fought Gallen, and by the way, Barry didn't have a good lead in to that, Barry bought Sonny Bill, wasn't, you know, Sonny Bill.

[00:10:13] Wayne: So, when they do that, that's, I don't, I'm not critical, but, a box, an actual footballer, Other than one person, I think, in the history, and I know people will say well Sonny Bill, but Sonny Bill hasn't really fought other, uh, a lot of other boxers.

[00:10:29] Tony: No.

[00:10:30] Wayne: Neither has, neither has Barry, neither has Gallant. They've fought a lot of other footballers.

[00:10:35] Wayne: So, there's only been one person that's made that transition, in my opinion, in this country, and that's Anthony Mundine. He was a superstar rugby league player. Yep. He transitioned into boxing and he became a champion boxer. Yep.

[00:10:49] Tony: And The only one. He was a freak at 26, he left rugby league and became Yeah,

[00:10:54] Wayne: he is the only one to do it.

[00:10:57] Wayne: And he's had

[00:10:59] Tony: 51 [00:11:00] fights, I think it is. I don't

[00:11:01] Wayne: think people understand how hard, and I'm sure actually, you know, Sonny, Bill and Galen and Hawley would attest to just how hard it is. Albeit those guys, you know, a lot older when they've taken up boxing. So, um, Yeah, look, I'm really looking forward to this. I think this will be, uh, I think it'll be a lot of fun.

[00:11:22] Wayne: I think as long as they take it, um, seriously and we don't see, you know, mucking around if it's fair dinkum. And I guess promote the sport in the right way and don't take the piss out of it. And that's why boxers probably get upset if that occurs. So I'm looking forward to it.

[00:11:38] Tony: Do you know what the purse is for a rich fighter?

[00:11:40] Wayne: No, but I've heard it's, it's um, a good amount. Substantial? I've heard good amount. We're talking, you know, sort of in the thirties and forties and maybe upward for a couple.

[00:11:53] Tony: That's pretty good money.

[00:11:54] Wayne: Yeah. 30s or 40s, that's not, you know, I think people know what that is. [00:12:00] 30k, 40k, sort of around there, maybe up, I don't know.

[00:12:02] Wayne: I don't know, that's a guess.

[00:12:03] Tony: Yeah, I know we're both looking forward to this at the Gather Round in Adelaide. Have you ever been approached to fight? Oh, heaps

[00:12:09] Wayne: of times. But I'm not, I'm not that silly.

[00:12:12] Tony: What do you always have? What's your famous catchphrase?

[00:12:14] Wayne: Fighting one out without a fight? The other one that I talk about, uh, gimmick fights.

[00:12:19] Wayne: Yeah. Jake Paul. Oh, yes. It's the, what, what, what do they call him? Social media. Star, yeah. Superstar. He's, he's huge. He's got more followers than a follower factory. Yep. He's, he's massive. The YouTuber, I think. Yeah, YouTuber. He's had heaps of, he's had, what's he, I think he's had about eight or nine fights now.

[00:12:37] Wayne: He's only been beaten by one guy, Tommy Fury.

[00:12:41] Tony: Tyson's brother.

[00:12:42] Wayne: Yes. Tommy Fury took, they went the distance. I think from memory because I watched it, went the distance and, and Tommy Fury got the, got the nod. So he did pretty well. He did really well, Jake Paul, but he's fighting Iron Mike Tyson.

[00:12:58] Tony: Another one of your [00:13:00] heroes.

[00:13:00] Wayne: He was, and I've met him and I've, we've, we've had him on the podcast. Fennec. We did meet through Jeff Fennec. He, he's in training at the moment. For anyone out there that is on uh, Twitter or whatever, what is it they're on now? Instagram. X and all of that. Yep. He's posting some of his training sessions.

[00:13:17] Wayne: And I'll tell you what, he, he, he clearly hasn't got the stamina that he used to have. But I'll tell you what, if he hits you,

[00:13:25] Tony: you stay here, you

[00:13:26] Wayne: stay here. So I'm

[00:13:27] Tony: running stuff is incredible. This

[00:13:29] Wayne: is fascinating. This is going to be a fascinating watch because, uh, Jake Paul has beaten some ex UFC fighters and you know, over the hill, uh, guys albeit, but they're not, they haven't been actual boxers.

[00:13:40] Wayne: Tyson was an actual absolute champion heavyweight. And yes, way over the hill and way older than what he is. But, um, that's, that's fascinating for me. This, I think that will create, talk about bring fans to boxing. That is going to create so much traffic. I

[00:13:59] Tony: reckon [00:14:00] it's a bit of a cash grab though on Tyson's behalf.

[00:14:03] Wayne: Well, who cares? Tyson's going okay. He's not, I don't think he's um, you know. He's been

[00:14:09] Tony: broke a few times, so people will turn around and say it is a mismatch. You

[00:14:13] Wayne: know what? Sometimes when you look at the positive of it, here's a guy who's You know, clearly not a boxer anymore, but he probably, this is a good excuse for him to get fit again, get strong, get into a training, get, you know, get a regime, like, the only thing, the only thing that can come out of it is a positive, so, I, I'm really fascinated, I think that's in July by the way, so, looking forward to that.

[00:14:36] Tony: Are they in Vegas?

[00:14:38] Wayne: Don't know, don't know where the fight is. I think it'll be much easier. I've just been following Tyson. saying, you know, I've just a few of his training sessions and I'm liking what I am seeing. I probably have to watch a few of Jake Paul's to see. He's a big boy.

[00:14:53] Tony: Yeah. Now, um, just to, uh, a couple of little tidbits, duck for us is, um, mundane is going to join us in Melbourne on [00:15:00] Friday.

[00:15:00] Tony: And we also want to give a shout out to our, to our old mate, Jeff Fennec, who is currently in a hospital. Recovering from surgery. So big shout out to Jeff. He's a big fan of, uh, Modern Heroes. Four time

[00:15:11] Wayne: world champion. Yep. Um, absolute, absolute, yeah, absolute gun. Yep. And, uh, he's, he's got through that. He, he has, he's had a tough week.

[00:15:20] Wayne: He has, he actually went

[00:15:21] Tony: under the knife again yesterday to release a blood clot in his calf.

[00:15:24] Wayne: Anyone can, uh, fight their way through it. It's, uh, it's Jeff Fennec.

[00:15:28] Tony: So our thoughts and prayers are with him. Absolutely.

[00:15:30] Wayne: And, uh, watch We're in Fitbit. We were at the Fitbit launch yesterday for Darcy Ellis. Yeah, Darcy Ellis, uh, Lester's brother.

[00:15:39] Tony: Yes.

[00:15:39] Wayne: It's a great day. It was a good day. A lot of kids, a lot of families. Yep, fellow

[00:15:44] Tony: boxers. There was Billy Dibb. Yep. Barry Michael, Mr Ellis. Barry Michael was there,

[00:15:48] Wayne: yep.

[00:15:48] Tony: And your favourite news reader, Peter Hitchener. Peter Hitchener,

[00:15:52] Wayne: he

[00:15:52] Tony: was

[00:15:52] Wayne: there. He was there. That was good. And you know what, that was, wasn't that a good family environment?

[00:15:59] Wayne: That was. A lot of [00:16:00] people there that just, you know, Came in to have a look at the gym and you had the coaches there. It was great. He's done well, Darcy.

[00:16:05] Tony: He has.

[00:16:05] Wayne: Done well. We've got a couple, we've got a few gyms, got a few gyms around that area, which is

[00:16:10] Tony: good. So we wish him all the best.

[00:16:12] Wayne: Wish him all the best.

[00:16:13] Wayne: And, um, yeah, for anyone that wants to, by the way, this is not a Well, this is not a plug for that. I, I, I'm seriously fascinated by these guys gather around Wednesday night. Watch, uh, watch, watch these, uh, ex has been footballers some more recently retired than others on stand. I think it's going to be fascinating.

[00:16:32] Tony: I agree. And just before we wrap up the show, young Aiden who played out at, uh, Beaconsfield yesterday, he's got to go fund me page. He does. And we'll put that up on the podcast for those wishing to get involved and or even donate. Well done, Tony. Thanks, Brian.
